Hawaii History

Have you ever wonder who are the ancestors of Native Hawaiians?

About 1,500 years ago, Polynesian voyagers settled in Hawaiian Islands.

It was rediscovered by the western world headed by Bristish Captain James Cook.
Captain Cook named the archipelago the Sandwich Islands after his patron The Earl of Sandwich. For so many years, the islands were referred to as Sandwich Islands.

Before the British arrived, the islands were ruled as independent kingdoms by hereditary chiefs. One chief, Kamehameha the Great consolidated his power in a series of battles and united the islands under his rule.

In 1893, the last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Liliuokalani, was overthrown and the provisional government under the leadership of Sanford Ballard Dole was formed.

By joint Resolution of Congress, the islands were officially annexed on August 2, 1898.

President Eisenhower signed into law a bill providing Hawaii's admission into the United States.

In August 1959, Hawaii became the 50th state of the Union.

"Rediscovered?!" hawaii! The whiteman has a way of talking that always favors themselves. Like, 'the whiteman 'discovered' the american continents. Never mind that there were over an estimated hundred million people living there. It was the whiteman that 'discovered' the continents! Lie's, lie's and ever more lie's. Thats all we natives have ever gotten from the whitemen. For the record, the whiteman is the most bloodthirsty savages this planet has ever known and I urge you to check it out on the internet because the whiteman will certainly not admit it. Look at Iraq today. That treacherous Bush-Cheney combo caused the deaths of over 150
thousan Iraqui's just so their Profiteering friends could make hundreds of billions of dollars off that phony war.

Thanks for the comment.

Let me set the record straight...

In 1778, over 300,000 native Hawaiians inhabited the islands.

At the time of Cook's arrival, the islands were ruled as independent kingdoms by hereditary chief.

Early Hawaiians had an advanced and organized society. I will discuss about the life of early Hawaiians on my next blog.

I think it would behoove everyone to look at how colonialism has affected Hawaiians...to this day. Lets try and avoid only focusing on the 'ancient hawaiians' to further exotify a hawaiian fantasy. We lost 94% of our population to disease that Cooke, his men and other white merchants brought over. Our culture was deemed savage and evil and our language and customs were banned. Through the "Great" Mahele, only 1% of Native Hawaiian maka'ainana (commoners) were left with any land at all. We are still displaced. We are struggling to learn the language of our ancestors, we have the worst health statistics in the state, the highest suicide rate and the most men in prison. We were once a soverign people. We continue to struggle to survive here because the price of housing just keeps going up and up because people who are not from here but, them being the only ones that can afford it, continue to move here and purchase their 3 bedroom houses for 650,000 dolloars. Native Hawaiians cannot compete and the much of the entire western shoreline of O'ahu is inundated with homeless people, many many of whom are Native Hawaiian. Their lives do not represent the white persons fantasy of 'living on the beach'. It is rife with drug abuse and violence against women. These are real issues that people moving here need to face as well as face how their moving here is contributing to oppression.
